Last year, I retired and had high hopes of going outside, fishing, doing “stuff” but was constantly hampered by rainy weather.  This spring, things looked pretty positive for an improvement. We had NO SNOW in our yard in mid-March and optimistically I brought the boat home from the barn in Dayton where she sleeps for the winter.

Sure enough, all of a sudden snow was in the forecast for the next day so I parked her in the driveway with the cover OFF so that it wouldn’t be damaged by snow load and then….. Snowmageddon!  We got six inches of heavy wet snow and ice on the trees.  Trees came crashing down all around us and we lost power.  For the first time since 1997 I had to set up and run the generator we have in the garage and ran it for almost a whole day.  I was prepared to run it for multiple days, but on Sunday we got our power back. I spent the whole night listening to giant thumps in the yard even though there was little to no wind.  It was just sheer ice weight bringing them down.  Not just branches were coming down, whole trees.

The next morning I surveyed the yard and the boat, shed, and house were spared any damage.  There wasn’t any branches or debris on the structures, but there was a lot of debris in the yard and the back woods.  The boat was full of snow and the scuppers were dangling icicles all the way to the ground.

To add injury to this, the weather forecast for the rest of this week and into the next is for rain and mild temps.  The upside of this is that the snow in the yard and boat will probably all melt during this time but I am not liking the pattern of continuous rain.  Hopefully it is a case of “April Showers” which is almost a normal pattern.  Oh well, let’s see how it plays out.  In the mean time, keep those shovel’s handy and your boots laced up.

Live long and prosper. wink
